Earley steps aside from Foothillers post
Grossmont 2; Valhalla 4
By Bill Dickens © East County Sports.com RANCHO SAN DIEGO (5-18-12) — Grossmont High head coach JIM EARLEY, who stepped down after 21 seasons of coaching baseball in one of East County’s most highly successful programs, won’t be taking the Foothillers to the San Diego CIF for the first time in the last eight years.
After an 8-2 start, the Foothillers (8-22, 0-15 GHL) finished in the cellar of the Grossmont Hills League with a 20-game losing streak.
Earley coached his final game in a Foothillers uniform in Thursday’s (May 17) GHL final won by host Valhalla, 4-2.
Overall, the 40-year-old Earley who has been the Foothillers head coach the last four seasons, also served as an assistant coach to JEFF MEREDITH and ROB PHILLIPS. Earley, a 1990 Grossmont graduate, was associated with nine San Diego CIF baseball championships and helped guide the Foothillers to the section finals 15 seasons.
“Funny thing is I don’t know what to do in these next two weeks,” Earley said. “Like my kids have asked is ‘Dad, aren’t we going to Tony Gwynn Field like we always we do?’ So I guess we will just enjoy a little free time.”
